CBD and Caffeine: Can they work together?

CBD and Caffeine: Can they work together?

Caffeine, the active ingredient found in coffee and tea, is by far the most popular stimulant on earth. It’s estimated that over 2 billion cups of coffee are consumed every day, with roughly 3 billion people estimated to be drinking tea daily.

Many drink coffee to provide them with the kick they need to get moving in the morning and handle the day, and caffeine has almost become synonymous with productivity. However, caffeine comes with its own side effects, and in some people it can produce jitters, an upset stomach, or a touch of anxiety.

When it comes to CBD, adding the oil to coffee is proving to be a very popular method of ingesting the substance. In smaller doses, CBD oil could provide that desired dash of stability and balance to your day, and taking it with coffee may be an ideal option.

For starters, incorporating CBD into your daily routine is easy if you like to start your morning with a cup of coffee. If you’re prone to forgetting about actually taking CBD, it’s likely to become much more of a natural habit when incorporated into another part of your daily pattern. Many find it helpful to streamline their process of CBD ingestion and find the habit sticks more when paired with their coffee.

When figuring out how much is right for you, adding CBD to your coffee is similar to using CBD as a tincture, and it may take some time to gauge your perfect dose. Ideally, starting small and increasing by small amounts is the best method until your optimal quantity is found.

How they affect each other

As a method of consumption, ingesting CBD may bring about more sustained effects in comparison to inhalation as another method of consumption. While inhalants might be faster in entering your system, they are therefore just as quick to exit. When CBD is consumed via the mouth and enters the digestive system, it takes longer for the substance to be absorbed by the stomach. Similarly, it takes longer for CBD to leave the system through this method of consumption.

When CBD and caffeine are taken together, you may anticipate that the substances could cancel each other out, when in actuality, you are more likely to experience longer lasting benefits of each substance.

Almost everything that enters the body needs to be processed by the liver in order to be eventually removed from the body. In order to do this, the liver uses a series of specialized enzymes to disassemble drugs, cell byproducts, and other compounds in our bloodstream. Caffeine and cannabidiol are alike enough in structure to require the same enzymes by the liver.

As there is a limit to the metabolizing power of the liver, when compounds such as CBD and caffeine are taken together, the liver can only process these so fast. Therefore, the breakdown of these substances takes a little longer, meaning that CBD oil and caffeine can increase the duration of effects for each other.

The Takeaway

As with most administrations of CBD, the research into its effects when combined with caffeine is still progressing. For now, being informed about your intended use of CBD, like knowing about the quality of the product you're taking, is the most important thing. Starting with small doses and making informed choices about your wellbeing will lead to a more positive experience.
